Initially crosshairs will appear, allowing selection of the area to be screenshotted pressing the space bar toggles between selecting an area or whole window.
Before taking the screenshot, a dialog box appears to ask for the desired file name.

NvALT archive screenshot.workflow is An Automator workflow implementing a service that takes a screenshot, moves it to a canonical location and copies a Markdown-formatted image URL to that image. NvALT archive.workflow is an Automator workflow implementing a Finder service that moves image files to a canonical location and copies a Markdown-formatted image URL to that image, enabling each incorporation of images. The first ( nvALT archive.workflow) was originally written by mjpost, and only slightly modified by me. The files in this archive provide several functions. To allow access to my notes from anywhere, I git push to a repository on a VPS running Gollum.To allow indexing of my notes, I have a script which automatically scans through my notes, extracts metadata in a a particular format and converts it to an index.To allow quick capturing of image files or screenshots, I have automator actions that quickly move screenshots or image files into an archive folder (with subfolders for year and month), and copies the markdown needed to display them to the clipboard.

To make good use of NV, try to maintain one detail/fact/item per note. Reveal a note's content by using the up/down arrow keys to select it. To view or edit an existing note, type one or more words contained in its body or title. Edit the note as needed in the bottom pane. To create a new note, just type its title and press return. Correspondingly, selecting a note places its title in the search area (De-selecting the note restores the search terms). This selects the note and consequently displays it. If a note's title starts with the search term(s), that title will be "auto-completed". Likewise, if a search reveals nothing, one need simply press return to create a note with the appropriate title. I.e., in the process of entering the title for a new note, related notes appear below, letting users file information there if they choose. The same area is used both for creating notes and searching.
